It's Labor Day and everyone is preparing for a neighborhood picnic. Hal Carter, a lonely drifter, arrives looking for work and shakes up a Kansas town, particularly its female inhabitants, including Madge who yearns for a more exciting life, her plain and bookish sister Millie, and her uptight schoolteacher.

Recommended for adults and mature youth.
